It's a festival
It seems to me that the Chinese like to get started on Chinese New Year festivities as soon as possible after the solar New Year. Thus recently we have attended one wedding and 2 birthday parties. Note how western traditions have been adopted into Chinese culture: white wedding dress, birthday cake and candles.
